Visiting Shangri La with the work fam

Being born and raised on Oahu, and a lover of museums and art, you'd think I'd have visited Doris Duke's Shangri La… unfortunately it wasn’t until yesterday that I finally got to experience it.

We're a pretty tight-knit crew at work, and we're always looking for unique ways to spend our time off. When someone suggested Shangri La, there was an immediate buzz. We'd all heard about this incredible estate, a legendary haven of Islamic art nestled right here on our island, but none of us had actually been.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn't just another historical home. The architecture, the intricate details, the sheer beauty of the surroundings – most imported and shipped over from all over the world. Walking through the various rooms and courtyards, each one more stunning than the last, felt like stepping into a living, breathing museum.

I was particularly captivated by the exquisite tile work, the vibrant textiles, and the breathtaking views of the ocean from the different vantage points. Every corner offered a new discovery, a new piece of art or design that spoke to Doris Duke's incredible passion and foresight in collecting these treasures.

What struck me most as a local was the stark contrast between the vibrant, bustling Oahu we know and the serene, almost otherworldly tranquility of Shangri La. It's a testament to how much hidden beauty and culture can be found right in our own backyard.

For anyone who has an appreciation for Middle Eastern art, or simply wants to experience something truly unique and beautiful on Oahu, I cannot recommend a visit to Shangri La enough. Whether you're a visitor to the island or, like me, a local who's just discovering its wonders, it's an experience that will leave you feeling enriched and inspired.
